Fixed or bioclimatic pergola?

A fixed pergola and a bioclimatic one solve different problems. The second offers adjustable shading, and usually brings more mechanisms, sensors and maintenance requirements with it.

The two solve different problems. A fixed angled louvre gives shade; it does not keep the water out. A bioclimatic one has rotating louvres that allow shade and ventilation to be adjusted within the same structure and that close against rain — and with them come a motor, a power supply, controls and, where provided, a rain or wind sensor, each of which needs maintenance and one day perhaps a spare part. Three things decide: the wind, since the structure and its fixings are calculated for the place; whether watertightness is needed or only shade; and access for servicing.

Before we decide

  • exposure to sun and wind,
  • whether the structure needs to be watertight or only to provide shade,
  • management of rainwater,
  • the existing supports,
  • automation and future servicing.

What the bioclimatic one adds

Rotating louvres allow shade and ventilation to be adjusted within the same structure, and close for shelter from rain. With them come a motor, a power supply, controls and — where specified — a rain or wind sensor. Each of those is a point that needs maintenance and may one day need a spare part.

What decides the choice

  • Wind. The structure and its fixings are calculated for the location; in an exposed position that weighs more than appearance.
  • Shelter or only shade. A fixed angled louvre gives shade; it does not keep the water out.
  • Access for service. Where a ladder reaches, how the motor comes out, where the cables run.
